Peek-a-Boo

"Peek-a-Boo" is the designation of this public art installation in front of a Vancouver, BC condominium. Eight of our X1 | aire1 exterior bollards are installed in front of this residential area. The lenses were screen-printed with partial photos of children (photo artists are Jacqueline Metz & Nancy Chew) at play, "peeking" out from behind the light. Our agent, Christopher W. Quigley, of CDM2 Lightworks in British Columbia, assisted the developer with the design of this project. Positioned in front of the condominiums and facing the walkway, the a·light X1 children "playing" in front of the residence is meant to express a feeling of youthful exhuberance, while subtly intoning the safeness of the area. 

Vancouver’s Public Art Program, ongoing since 1990,  seeks to incorporate art into city planning and development. Projects at civic buildings, greenways, parks and other public spaces are funded through capital budgets; private sector projects are funded by new developments in the rezoning process. Therefore, all new developments require a commitment to incorporating some form of public art into their projects. Vancouver's program requires that $1.81 per square foot on projects 100,000 square feet or greater go to public art or other public amenities. For Vancouver developers, public art installations are mandatory, but saavy companies embrace the requirement as a unique way to stand out. Public art can be displayed as standard sculpture or landmarks, but can also include alternate forms of art, including lighting installations such as this one, street furniture, vegetation, even dance or music.

Peek-a-Boo was commissioned by Cressey Developments for Public Art at the Porter Street and Victoria Diversion, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
